About

How GEDkin Works

GEDkin partners with penal institutions and recovery programs in communities throughout the country. We offer confidential Free Family Tree Building and Genetic Genealogy (DNA) for inmates, returning citizens and persons in recovery.  Participants are asked to fill out our consent form, a basic family tree form and take a DNA test. We do the rest.

WHAT PARTICIPANTS RECEIVE

  • A report on the history of your family - who they were, where they came from, their accomplishments and hardships.
  • A Ethnicity Estimate
  • A family tree for both sides (parents)

If you or your institution are interested in this program

How Genealogy Enhances Self-Worth

GEDkin programs help our clients find self-worth and purpose by creating empathy for their family through learning  what their families  may have faced. It helps our clients understand what historical events shaped their families, what occupations and skills their ancestors had, where they originated and what health concerns they may have had. Genealogy can bring estranged family members together. Many times our mental health can keep us from achieving what's out there and what is best for us. There is a lot we can learn from our ancestors lives to become stronger individuals. A person who knows their ancestry can pave a promising future and break through mental barriers. And, when those barriers are broken, what is left is a path for success.

Who We Are

GEDkin is a small 501(c)3 non-profit. We are genealogists who believe  everyone should have the opportunity to know where they came from and what traits they may share with their ancestors.

Traditionally, Genealogy is expensive and only those who have the education or the financial means have been able to follow their families footsteps, learn their ethnicity and look deeper into their genetic DNA. More so for those who were adopted or grew up on a foster home knowing nothing

about their parentage.

GEDkin is a free service for anyone who is involved with an institution revolving around the penal system or recovery programs.

Genetic Genealogy - DNA

Genetic Genealogy is a  specialized  field that combines DNA test results with traditional genealogy research  to discover how individuals are related, allowing for genealogy research results to be much more specialized and accurate. It is particularly useful for those who have lost contact with their biological families, such as adoptees, who can use the results to

discover their birth parentage,  discover relatives and answer questions regarding ethnicity and biological origins.

Traditional Genealogy Research

Traditional Genealogy, the sole research method for generations, began long before the internet offered the plethora of options we are accustomed to today. Traditional methods still include in-person visits to repositories which hold documents not available online. Our genealogical services includes traditional research for all of our clients, including reaching out to fellow genealogists around the world so that we submit a complete family background research report for each of our clients.
